It takes 30 at a minimum. This is even after I have gotten it down to a science. Don't even think about that time frame if cafeteria workers don't show up for work. For two days, we were short 2 cafeteria workers, and two people had to serve breakfast to 755 students. It was taking so long that Teacher's Aides/Assistants had to start serving the meals.
I resent having to take 30 minutes away from my instructional day to serve breakfast. That's the time that I spend teaching SPELLING.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-86817905926351015602010-06-02T14:25:01.908-05:002010-06-02T14:25:01.908-05:00As a teacher who has been doing this for 2 years, ...As a teacher who has been doing this for 2 years, I hate losing out on 30 minutes of instruction time to serve breakfast. I am sorry but this is NOT acceptable. I still wonder what TEA has to say about this.
On top of that, EVERY child is supposed to get a breakfast whether or not they want it. You are breaking the rules.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-85962989792062435352010-06-02T14:20:55.712-05:002010-06-02T14:20:55.712-05:00None. As a teacher who just completed her second ...None. As a teacher who just completed her second year of breakfast in the classroom, I gave up last school year. I am just chalking it up to 30 minutes of lost instructional time. Before breakfast is served, my students do boardwork. After we get the cards to pass out, I make them put everything away. At least 2-3 days a week, I have to get a clean up.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-91857338169383891202010-05-28T17:27:00.013-05:002010-05-28T17:27:00.013-05:00First Class Breakfast works for many campuses, how...First Class Breakfast works for many campuses, however, it may not be for all. Many children in poverty stricken areas may eat breakfast and lunch but go hungry to bed. This is a no cost program to all children in H.I.S.D. consider yourself fortunate to participate in the program. In some areas, more parents know what is on the menu, but don't the name of their childs teacher. Some schools have had the program for several schools and the children like it because there is not a stigma attached to eating breakfast, therefore, they eat. The menu does have some tasty items on it, however, there is a lot to be desired. I think they need to get rid of the animal crackers and poptart. Each menu it analyze according to standards that are the same from one state to another. Find out more information on squaremeals.com. H.I.S.D is on nutrient standard. If H.I.S.D changed from Nutrient Standard to Food Base, many of these issues would be addressed with the menu. Unfortunately, the items that are not consumed must be thrown away according to federal and state guideline. If H.I.S.D gets reimbursed for each meal served, how would it look if they served items that have been returned and collected a second reimbursement. Instructional time is effected for several reasons: 1) teachers are late getting to their classroom at the designated time. 2) Nobody passes out the cards and servers are not left idle at the door. 3) Classrooms are diverted to the restroom during serving times. 4) Sometimes it being short handed and bad service. Push H.I.S.D to utilize new facility to it's potential. I am fortunate to have my child eat for free because as a single parent, I would have to feed my baby at 6:00 a.m. in order to make it to work on time or pay for breakfast.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-17409900131519957272010-05-26T14:04:44.799-05:002010-05-26T14:04:44.799-05:00Agreed. I have no problem with the free breakfast but it should not cut into instructional time.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-19421605951174799132010-05-26T13:04:45.911-05:002010-05-26T13:04:45.911-05:00Ok, you are acting surprised and shocked by the tr...Ok, you are acting surprised and shocked by the trash food count! This happens every single day at every school. Children don't like fruit, so they throw it away. Some children do not like yogurt, so they throw it away. Food is being throw away in the mornings and during lunch and yes that is waist of tax money but that has been happening since I was in school. What needs to be done, is whatever food is left over ...it should be allowed to be distributed to poor familes around the community. Maybe a the class teacher can have a small refrigerator and store the milk for later on as a snack in the afternoon. When I grew up, I was taught to not wait a thing. This principal should be taught today as well!!!!!!!!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-62535259563639558612010-05-26T08:58:38.881-05:002010-05-26T08:58:38.881-05:00I am a teacher and there are WAAAAAY too many anim...I am a teacher and there are WAAAAAY too many animal crackers being served. The kids are so sick of them, and recently they have started dipping them in their milk to make it taste better. They DO like a little bag called Bug Bites that are cinnamon graham crackers - they usually fight over these if people do not want them, and I too love to eat them! I think the school should also go to Yoplait light or fat free yogurt over that Trix stuff - there are so many yummy flavors of Yoplait they could use... I think half of the reason kids won't eat certain stuff is that it's SO repetiive- they get so excited about the eggs, chicken biscuit, and blueberry muffin, which only come every few weeks!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-75993850697143525402010-05-25T13:50:40.732-05:002010-05-25T13:50:40.732-05:00I think that there needs to be is less fatty foods...I think that there needs to be is less fatty foods offered. Whole wheat pop tarts??? come on, why are we giving our kids so much sugar. I do not serve my kids this at home why on earth would i allow them to eat this at school. Also, why do we need to serve our kids flavored milk? 1% milk, OJ and bottled water should be their options. I bet if bottle water was served less milk would go to waste. I am on the parent advisory committee for my sons school. One of the meetins Food Services had told parents that they introduced meat loaf to one of the schools lunch and the kids loved it. That is great, I applaud them for doing this but if you are giving kids the choice of meat loaf and pizza i seriously doubt that the kids are going to choose meat loaf. Let Pizza be a reward, a Friday food, along with hot dogs and hamburgers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-87274555409860523022010-05-25T13:48:25.985-05:002010-05-25T13:48:25.985-05:00That is absolutely disgusting and breaks my heart....That is absolutely disgusting and breaks my heart. HISD claims to be concerned about families who can't afford food and is then throwing away mountains of unopened food every day????

And what kind of message is this sending the kids about waste, recycling, and conservation?

Ugh.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-90561167021887023292010-05-25T13:14:05.814-05:002010-05-25T13:14:05.814-05:00I don't understand how you or any parent could...I don't understand how you or any parent could support taking 30 minutes out of the instructional day this. Most schools have free breakfast available BEFORE school, to anyone who wants it. It's not that hard to get to school 10 minutes early to eat the free breakfast in the cafeteria. Why force everyone to be subjected to this program and the unhealthy Aramark food?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-69824433829256765802010-05-25T10:10:20.095-05:002010-05-25T10:10:20.095-05:00I am appalled by the waste that is involved with t...I am appalled by the waste that is involved with the First Class Breakfast program. Not only is this a waste of tax dollars, it actually undermines the science curriculum. The science TEKS for Kindergartners include the objective "learn how to use and conserve resources and materials" (K.1.B). By 3rd grade, the objective is a little more sophisticated: "make wise choices in the use and conservation of resources and the disposal or recycling of materials" (3.1.B).
The most effective school districts have a laser-like focus on protecting instructional time and teaching the curriculum. I hate to see decisions made at the district level at HISD undermine the great work that schools are doing to educate children.
Many of our children live in poverty, and it's important to make sure they get fed--but not at the cost of losing instructional time or being exposed to practices that undermine the learning objectives.Donna R.https://www.blogger.com/profile/03992194799108377202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2055736363386625222.post-4713058993372186002010-05-21T17:29:18.458-05:002010-05-21T17:29:18.458-05:00Actually you can OPT-OUT...a school cannot, but we...Actually you can OPT-OUT...a school cannot, but we as parents and guardians are allowed simply so NO, I don't want my child(ren) to be allowed to eat the breakfast. HISD is a very diverse district; however, Dr. Grier himself said the following publicly, March 24, 2010.

We have received some "push-back" from parents at several of our schools who oppose the First Class Breakfast program's being required districtwide. Some have expressed concern that this may be one of the first steps to "re-centralize" decision-making—major decisions being made by the central-office staff instead of at the school level. Nothing could be further from the truth. Others feel that a large percentage of the children in their schools already eat breakfast at home and should not have to sit by and watch other students eat breakfast in their classrooms or feel pressured into eating breakfast twice. We want to be clear that principals and teachers in each sch ool have the complete freedom to design their program to meet the needs of students in their school. No two programs have to look exactly the same. We are inviting concerned parents and teachers to visit schools across the district where the program has been successfully implemented.

What gives HISD the right to pass down a ONE-SIZE-FITS_ALL program? We as parents in a community have the right to OPT-OUT. A simple state of NO, and please place in my permanent records is all it takes.A. Channoreply@blogger.com
